As Chinese opera continues to evolve with the times, the author hopes that this book will inspire readers to take a deeper look at this intriguing performance art.
About the author
Award-winning author and photographer Dr Chua Ee Kiam is fascinated with what the camera can do. Better known for his prolific work on wildlife, Dr Chua has curated eight books on biodiversity spanning from 1994-2016.
A dentist by training, Dr Chua became intrigued by Chinese Opera when he was invited to a performance in 2005. His lack of understanding of the language did not deter him. Observing hebind the scenes, he was enamoured by the stunning make-up and intricate, glittering costumes. He watched the stage come alive as the orchestra harmonised the singing and gestures of the performers. As he began to study deeper, he carefully documented more than 80 opera performances over a 12 years-period.
